DOCUMENTARY PHOTO TECHNIQUES WITH PHOTOSHOP AND AFTER EFFECTS

- Hi, my name's Rich Harrington, and thanks for joining me today. We're going to explore how to use two different tools from Adobe to help tell stories. We're going to work with historical images and take advantage of both Adobe Photoshop and Adobe After Effects. Adobe Photoshop is a great tool for enhancing images. And while you might be used to working with modern photos, there are a ton of tools that you can use inside of it to enhance historical images. I studied history in college, as well as was a journalism major, so I have a very warm spot in my heart for preserving history.

And I love being able to go in and restore photos and optimize them. Now, we're going to be doing this for screen-based storytelling, so if you're working on corporate videos, historical documentaries, broadcast television, any of the above, this is a great way to draw upon historical sources. Maybe it's to tell the story of an individual or your company. And by taking time to restore these images, there's a lot of things you could do to really bring them to life. We'll remove distractions, enhance contrast, fix minor color issues, and get consistency when working with historical greyscale or sepia tone images.

Once that's done, we'll move into a tool like Adobe After Effects. And in here, you'll learn how to apply pan and scan techniques. These allow you to zoom and move across the photos to reveal details. We'll be focusing on very traditional techniques, often referred to as the Ken Burns effect for the historical filmmaker, but these have been used by filmmakers for many years. I'll walk you through how to use some of the beginner features in After Effects, as well as a few subtle, more advanced options that can really improve the quality, such as easing and adding vignettes during post-production.

This will really help get great quality images that are ready to use with any video editing tool. Now, this is a great course no matter what your experience level is. Even if you're familiar with Photoshop or After Effects, you'll learn a complete workflow that will help you as a storyteller. So, whether you are a video editor, a motion graphic artist, a corporate video producer, or a videographer, this course will help you out. It doesn't matter your experience level. We'll jump in at the beginning and then walk you through everything you need to know to get professional results.

Let's get started.
